Introduction

  • Introduction
  • Why is instruction important?
  • What do you learn?

Legal basis
In Germany, there are laws and regulations that protect your safety at work. These are particularly important for industrial trucks: DGUV Regulation 1: Basic rules for safety at work Occupational Health and Safety Act §12: The company must inform you about hazards Industrial Safety Ordinance §12: This concerns safe work equipment, e.g. forklift trucks DGUV Rule 68/69: Important rules specifically for industrial trucks European directives: They define minimum technical requirements for equipment You don't need to know the laws by heart. The important thing is that you should work safely and the company must ensure that everything is explained to you correctly.

Responsibility of travellers
When you operate an industrial truck, you have a great deal of responsibility. You may only drive the vehicle if you are trained to do so. You have to look out for people, goods and buildings. You must check your vehicle briefly every day before you set off. If something is broken or unsafe, you must not continue driving. Report problems immediately.

Vehicle inspection & daily visual inspection
Before you set off, do a quick check: Are the tyres OK? Is there any oil or fluids on the floor? Are the brakes, horn and lights working? Are the forks or mast damaged? Are your seat and seat belt correct? If something is wrong: Stop! Do not drive on.

Traffic routes, storage areas & safety in the surrounding area
Paths must be clear in the warehouse. People must not stand in narrow areas where forklift trucks are travelling. Drive slowly and carefully. Keep your distance from people. Take bends at low speed. Pay attention to mirrors, signs and markings.

Load support & load centres
A forklift truck can tip over if the load is picked up incorrectly. Always pick up loads completely with both forks. Pay attention to the load's centre of gravity. The load must not be too heavy or too high. Keep the load low while driving. Never drive round bends with a raised load.

Frequent hazards & accidents
Many accidents happen because people are not seen or because loads fall. Sometimes forklifts tip over. You can prevent such accidents if you pay attention, drive slowly and pick up your load safely. Always use your personal protective equipment.

Emergencies & behaviour in the event of malfunctions
If an accident occurs, call for help immediately. Do not carry out any risky repairs yourself. In case of fire: use extinguishing agents, keep your distance. If your vehicle stops: Switch off the engine, remove the keys, secure the area.

Completion, repetition & confirmation
Thank you for taking part in the training. This shows that your safety and the safety of your colleagues is important to you. Please confirm that you have read and understood everything.

Learning success control
Did you understand everything? A short quiz with ten randomly selected questions about the instruction will help to uncover any ambiguities so that we can talk about them again. Don't panic about questions - more knowledge means more safety.
